Shelby H. Carter, MDShelby H. Carter, MD

Board-Certified Orthopedic Surgeon

Dr. Shelby Carter is an orthopaedic surgeon, certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He is also a fellow of the American Academy of Surgeons, a fellow of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, a member of the International Congress for Joint Replacement, and a member of the Texas Orthopedic Association.

Dr. Carter graduated with honors from New York University School of Medicine in New York City in 1980. He then trained in general surgery at The Medical College of Virginia. After two years of general surgery, he entered the United States Air Force as a flight surgeon. During this time, he practiced aerospace medicine and flew with the FB-111 and KC 135 Air Force crews.

Subsequently, Dr. Carter completed a four year residency in orthopaedics at The Medical College of Virginia and the Children's Hospital of Richmond. He then served as the chief of orthopaedics at Offut Air Force Base and was on the staff at the University of Nebraska and Creighton University as a clinical instructor in orthopaedics. Dr. Carter began his private practice in Austin in 1990.

His orthopedic practice focuses on Hip and Knee replacement. His technique utilizes the most advanced surgical and medical techniques available to achieve optimal joint replacement outcomes. These include minimally invasive direct anterior hip replacement, muscle sparing knee replacement, partial knee replacement, and computer assisted surgery.
